Mike Lewis knew this much: He didn’t want to be wearing a Winnacunnet High School uniform when he played his final football game.
Lewis no longer has to worry about that. He’ll suit up for the East in the CHaD East-West New Hampshire All-Star Game on June 25, and he’ll join the Stonehill College football program shortly after that. Lewis, who played running back and linebacker for Winnacunnet last season, signed a National Letter of Intent to play at Stonehill on April 13 after verbally committing to the school in March.
Stonehill is a Division II program in Easton, Mass., that competes in the Northeast-10 Conference.
“Great fit for him,” Winnacunnet coach Ron Auffant said. “He should do very well there. He should have a smooth transition with (former Winnacunnet lineman) Christian Dyer being there.”
Lewis, 18, played varsity basketball for Winnacunnet, and is currently in his senior season of varsity lacrosse. He said Marist, Bentley and the University of New Hampshire were some of the other schools he considered, and added that academics played a large role in his decision.
“I think Stonehill is a good academic fit,” Lewis said. “It should put me in a better position with a job after I finish school.
“I originally went down there for a workout for recruits. I like the school, the coaches — how they do things.”
Lewis said he is an even 6-foot, and weighs 205 pounds. Although he rushed for 1,244 yards and scored 15 touchdowns during his senior season at Winnacunnet, he said Stonehill recruited him to play linebacker.
“It doesn’t really matter what they recruited me for, as long as I get an opportunity,” Lewis said. “I love playing linebacker.”
Lewis became a starting linebacker at Winnacunnet during his sophomore season. He started at running back during his junior and senior seasons.
“I’m excited,” Lewis said. “I didn’t want Winnacunnet to be the last place I played football. I wanted four more years.”
