Robin Bowkett is coming home.
Bowkett, who played quarterback and defensive back at Souhegan High School from 1997 to 2000, has been hired as Souhegan’s varsity football coach. Bowkett replaces Mike Lochman who resigned in December after four years as the program’s head coach.
Bowkett is currently the football coach and assistant dean of admission at Lake Forest Academy, a boarding school in Lake Forest, Ill.
“My wife graduated from Souhegan and we knew we were going to come back, it was just a matter of the right job, the right opportunity,” Bowkett said. “For me Souhegan is a dream job. I don’t know if it was when I was 25, but life changes. I was really fortunate to get offered the job.”
After he graduated from Souhegan, Bowkett played at Nichols College in Dudley, Mass. He also began his coaching career at Nichols, where he coached running backs for one season after he graduated. He has also coached at Salve Regina and St. Anselm College.
Bowkett said he will finish the school year at Lake Forest, and then plans to move back to the Amherst area. He said he will also make a trip to Souhegan in March (during spring break) to meet with his new team.
“It’s really important for me to get in front of the team soon,” he said. “We going to cater to our better players. Find out what they can do and can’t do, and let our athletes make plays.”
The Sabers were 17-18 with one Division II playoff appearance during Lochman’s four-year tenure.
“Really, really excited about getting back to the Amherst/Mont Vernon community,” Bowkett said. “There’s some great tradition with Souhegan football. It’s an honor and a privilege to be the head football coach at Souhegan.”
