Early signing period arrives

A 72-hour early signing period for college football recruits that will begin Dec. 20 has been approved by the Collegiate Commissioners Association, an organization in charge of the National Letter of Intent program. The NCAA Division I Council approved the proposed early signing period in April.

The Dec. 20-22 dates coincide with the first three days for junior college players to sign letters of intent allowing them to transfer to four-year colleges. That period runs from Dec. 20 to Jan. 15.

Note: Players in the Class of 2018 are not permitted to take official visits until the start of their senior year. Beginning with the Class of 2019, players can start taking official visits in April of their junior year.

Division II colleges have not finalized a decision on whether or not to use the early signing period. That decision is expected to come this summer.
