Welch won’t coach this season

Sanborn Regional coach John Welch will not be on the sideline this fall.

Welch will take a one-year leave of absence from coaching football to focus on his family. Welch, who teaches at Sanborn Regional, and his wife are expecting twins. Tony King, who spent five years as an assistant coach under Welch, will serve as Sanborn’s head coach for the 2018 season.

Welch has been Sanborn’s head coach for the last six seasons. The Indians have a 26-28 record during that stretch. He was the team’s defensive coordinator under former head coach Mike Drouin, and was elevated to head coach when Drouin left the program.
