NCAA adopts new redshirt rule

Earlier this week the NCAA announced a change to its redshirt rules, which will now allow an athlete to participate in up to four games without without losing his or her redshirt season.

Previously a player would lose his redshirt status after taking the field for a single play.

Miami athletic director Blake James, the Division I council chairperson, said in a press release that the rule change is a move that will benefit both players and coaches.

“This change promotes not only fairness for college athletes, but also their health and well-being,” he said. “Redshirt football student-athletes are more likely to remain engaged with the team, and starters will be less likely to feel pressure to play through injuries. Coaches will appreciate the additional flexibility and ability to give younger players an opportunity to participate in limited competition.”

The new redshirt rule will begin this season.
