Bill Murphy: A celebration

A celebration of life for former Portsmouth High School football coach Bill Murphy will be held June 6 (1 p.m.) at the school’s varsity football field, Tom Daubney Field.

Following that event there will be a cash bar from 3-5 p.m. at the Clipper Tavern, which is located at 75 Pleasant St. in Portsmouth.

A graduate of Portsmouth High, Murphy coached football at Portsmouth High School — his alma mater — for 41 years. He got his start as a freshman coach in 1972, and then spent the last 17 as the program’s head coach.

Murphy, who died in February, was a defensive back on the Clippers’ 1964 Division I state championship team; served as an assistant coach when Portsmouth won Division I titles in 1976, 1977 and 1981 under head coach Tom Daubney, and guided the Clippers to back-to-back Division III state crowns in 2011 and 2012 as the program’s head coach.

He also coached track and field at Portsmouth, where he worked as a physical education teacher.

Everyone in the football New Hampshire football community is invited to attend.
