Starting with the 2023 high school football season, the Joe Yukica Chapter of the National Football Foundation will recognize a Player of the Year from an NHIAA school.
New Hampshire may be the only state that does not have a “consensus” Player of the Year chosen by an in-state organization like a coaches’ association or a statewide media publication.
The Gatorade Player of the Year is selected by voters outside of New Hampshire, and often recognizes a prep school player from New Hampshire. The Yukica Player of the Year guarantees that the top NHIAA player in the state will be honored each season.
“This is a great addition to high school football here in New Hampshire,” Salem coach Steve Abraham said. “An award like this is something we have in other NHIAA sports, and I think it will just increase the interest in high school football.”
The Yukica Player of the Year Award will be voted on by media members and coaches across the state. Voters will be asked to choose from a list of 10 semifinalists selected at the end of the regular season. Players from all four divisions are eligible.
“Totally in favor of this,” Londonderry coach Jimmy Lauzon said. “The Gatorade people do an outstanding job, but that award often goes to a prep school player who lives outside of New Hampshire. This guarantees that we will have a true New Hampshire Player of the Year each season.”
There will be more about this award on the “603 Sports Podcast,” which will be posted here on Wednesday.
