Shrine notes

Items of interest regarding the 63rd Annual Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl, which will be played Aug. 6 at Castleton University (5:30 p.m.):

  • Twenty-two schools are represented on the New Hampshire roster, which was released March 1. There are 17 schools represented on Vermont’s roster.
  • Epping/Newmarket’s Justin Leonard is New Hampshire’s head coach. Fair Haven’s Brian Grady is Vermont’s head coach. Grady also served as Vermont’s head coach for the 2000 game, when quarterback Mike Keenan completed 30 passes for 352 yards and six touchdowns in Vermont’s 47-40 victory. It was the last time Vermont prevailed in the game.
  • New Hampshire has won the last 15 games, and had a 47-13-2 edge in the series.
  • Gilford wide receiver Kyle Gaudet caught five passes for 190 yards and three touchdowns to help New Hampshire defeat Vermont 27-12 last year.
  • New Hampshire rushed had minus-3 yards rushing  and 325 yards passing in last year’s victory.
  • New Hampshire quarterback Stephen Hedberg (St. Thomas) holds the NHIAA record for TD passes in a season with 35. Hedberg passed for those 35 TDs as a junior, and finished his high school career with 65 TD passes.
  • Running back Carson Leary was Vermont’s Gatorade Player of the Year. He led Otter Valley to an 11-0 record and the Division III championship last season. Otter Valley defeated U-32 33-14 in the championship game. Leary rushed for 421 yards and five TDs on 34 carries in that victory. He completed the 2015 season with 2,484 yards rushing and 988 passing. He also scored 53 touchdowns (39 rushing).
  • Practice for this year’s game will begin July 31 at Castleton University.
