Szulc named top rookie

Three Plymouth State University football players were honored Monday with recognition from the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) for their performances in the Panthers’ thrilling triple-overtime victory last Saturday.

Freshman receiver Jacob Szulc (Concord) was named MASCAC Rookie of the Week, while two veterans, sophomore quarterback Zack Edwards and senior safety Zach Ziemba (Manchester/West) were members of the MASCAC Weekly Honor Roll. They were all key players in a 30-28 triumph over Mount Ida College in PSU’s home opener last Saturday.

A 6-3, 202-pound receiver, Szulc caught eight passes for 122 yards and two touchdowns in the victory. Both of his TDs came in overtime, a 25-yarder in the first overtime and a 22-yard completion in the second extra frame. Szulc ranks sixth in the MASCAC through two games in receptions (13) and fifth in receiving yards (158).

A 5-10, 176-pound QB, Edwards completed 17-of-25 passes for 231 yards and three touchdowns, all three coming in OT. After connecting with Szulc in the first two overtimes, Edwards found sophomore Brandonn Drumgole  on a 10-yard scoring pass for the go-ahead points in the third extra session. Edwards led the Panther offense to 328 yard of total offense.

A 5-11, 187-pound safety, Ziemba posted a team-high nine tackles in the win, including eight solo stops. He had one tackle in the Mount Ida backfield and also broke up a pass. Ziemba also plays on special teams and nearly blocked a Mustang kick.

The Panthers, 2-0 for the first time since 2011, will play their MASCAC opener this Saturday at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, Conn., beginning at noon.
