New Hampton loses opener

newhamptonThings began much better than they ended for the New Hampton School football team Saturday.

New Hampton raced out to an 18-0 lead in the first quarter, but surrendered the next 43 points in a 43-18 loss to Belmont Hill in the opener for each team.

The New Hampton touchdowns came on a 4-yard pass from quarterback Jake Dulac to Ian Gobbi; a 10-yard run by Dulac and a 1-yard run by Nick Spaulding.

Belmont Hill quarterback Mike Piazza completed 19 of 23 passes for 321 yards and four touchdowns (one interception). He also ran for a 19-yard touchdown, and finished the game with 66 yards rushing on six carries.

Dulac completed 7 of 10 passes for 91 yards (one TD, one INT) before he left the game with an injury in the second quarter. New Hampton’s Jack Daley, who had a team-high 88 yards rushing on 15 attempts, also left the game with an injury in the second quarter. Gobbi had two receptions for 55 yards.

It was 18-6 after the first quarter, 22-18 at halftime and 43-18 entering the fourth.

New Hampton ran 89 offensive plays, 36 more than Belmont Hill. The Huskies had a 23-18 edge in first downs. … New Hampton’s leading tacklers were Wes Narewski (seven), Troy Shallow (six), Spaulding (five) and Gobbi (four). … Belmont Hill had a 441-373 advantage in total offense, including a 321-128 edge in passing yards. The Huskies ran for 245 yards. … New Hampton was penalized 10 times for 94 yards. Belmont Hill was penalized once for 7 yards. … New Hampton will play at Pingree (Hamilton, Mass.) on Saturday.
