No final score from last weekend’s slate of games was more surprising than Portsmouth’s 21-14 victory at Exeter. It was the first time the Clippers have beaten the Blue Hawks since 1996, and they did it with backup quarterback Christian Peete filling in for injured starter Cody Graham.

Portsmouth trailed by seven points twice, but pulled even following Ben Barba’s 1-yard touchdown run with 2:37 left in the third quarter, and then took the lead for good on Peete’s 4-yard TD run with 3:08 to play. Peete, who usually lines up as a wide receiver, completed 11 of his 13 passes for 123 yards, and ran for 71 yards on 18 carries. Portsmouth’s first TD came on a 10-yard pass from Peete to Shon Parham, who had five receptions for 66 yards.

The victory extended Portsmouth’s winning streak to three games. The Clippers (4-1) now own sole possession of first place in Division I East. Exeter (4-1) suffered its first loss.
