Moments That Mattered
Stevens (9-2) led 16-14 at halftime, and took control of the game by outscoring I-L/M (8-3) 16-0 in the third quarter. Parker Smith caught a 61-yard touchdown pass from Henri Bourque on the second half’s opening possession, and tailback Richard Bell added a 2-yard TD run with 2:14 left in the quarter.
Beyond The Box Score
The victory gave Stevens the school’s first state championship in any sport since 1989 (boys soccer).
Talking Points
Stevens coach Paul Silva: “We don’t have a huge-sized line, but I think we get underestimated. We have some physical guys out there. We can run the ball when we have to, but as you saw we can come out of the huddle with the same personnel and pass the ball too.
“Take a look over there at those people waiting for these kids to come through that tunnel. They’ve been waiting a long, long time. I’m so happy for this group of kids to be the ones to give it to them.”
I-L/M coach Jon Francis: “You can’t just show up. You have to play the game. You have to do your jobs that you go over all week, and we failed to do that. Give Stevens all the credit in the world though. They came to play, they were prepared and they wanted it more than us today.”
