ASSUMPTION 55, ST. ANSELM 10: Box Score
MANCHESTER – The St. Anselm College football team was overmatched in a 55-10 loss to Assumption College on Saturday at Grappone Stadium.
St. Anselm remains winless in six contests, falling to 0-5 against Northeast-10 Conference opponents. Assumption, ranked 17th in NCAA Division II by the American Football Coaches Association, improved to 6-0 and to 5-0 against league foes.
The Greyhounds racked up 30 first downs en route to the victory, generating 530 yards of total offense while completing 21 of 27 passes on the day. The Hawks held the advantage in time of possession, but the Assumption offense clicked throughout the day, averaging 7.7 yards per play en route to nine separate scores.
Assumption sprinted out to a 14-0 lead with 4:02 left in the first quarter as Deonte Harris and Diamonte Robinson caught touchdown passes from Marc Monks and Cody Williams, respectively. The Greyhounds needed only 13 plays for 134 yards across 4:19 of the first 15 minutes to build a lead it would not relinquish.
Junior Daniel Parisi converted his team’s first field goal of 2017, a 25-yard attempt, to cap off a 10-play, 68-yard St. Anselm drive to cut the score to 14-3. Monks was at it again, however, throwing a 28-yard touchdown pass to Ashton Grant to complete a drive that was only three plays and 1:14 long.
Down by a 21-3 margin shortly into the second quarter, Assumption quarterback Marc Monks dropped back to throw but the ball was batted away by St. Anselm senior Liam Gillis. With the ball loose on the ground, Gillis picked it up and ran it back 47 yards to the Assumption 2-yard line where Monks recovered to make the lunging tackle.
St, Anselm quarterback Eric Fairweather connected with junior Kyle Hill on a 4-yard pass to cut the Hawks deficit to 21-10 following the Parisi point-after.
Assumption received two more touchdown passes from Monks, two field goals by Cole Tracy and an 87-yard punt return touchdown by Harris to conclude the scoring.
Monks completed the day hooking up on 17 of 19 passes for 319 yards. Brendan Tobey was 3 for 7, splitting time with Monks throughout the contest, and Cody Williams was a perfect 1-for-1, throwing a 2-yard touchdown. Dylan Oxsen had nine carries for 63 yards while Doug Santos had a rushing touchdown in addition to 29 yards – Assumption generated 203 yards on the ground and 352 yards through the air.
Correy King led St. Anselm with 56 yards on the ground on 10 carries. Fairweather, who was 6 for 13 passing, had a team-best 11 carries for 33 yards. Wilden Germain had his team’s long run of the afternoon, a 21-yard sprint. Hill caught four of his team’s eight receptions for 23 yards, scoring his squad’s lone touchdown.
Zaywhon Johnson recorded a game-high five solo tackles and led the Hawks with eight total tackles. Vinnie Shaffer and Gillis finished with a forced fumble apiece and the former joined junior Emmanuel Akinlosotu with fumble recoveries. Matt Bremis had one interception.
