Heneghan lands with 49ers

HANOVER — Dartmouth quarterback Jack Heneghan signed a free-agent contract with the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League on April 30, returning to the area where he grew up (Atherton, Calif.) and played prep football at the Menlo School.

Heneghan had participated in a pro day with the 49ers earlier in the month.

The 6-4, 230-pound senior led the team to an 8-2 record this year and a 5-2 mark in the Ivy League, good enough to tie for second place. Heneghan completed 185-of-293 passes (63.1 percent, 18th among FCS quarterbacks) for 2,136 yards and 17 touchdowns with six interceptions, plus ran for 162 yards and a score to earn all-conference honorable mention. Twice he topped 300 passing yards in a game last season, including 314 against Yale while leading the Big Green to the largest come-from-behind victory (21 points) in program history in a 28-27 triumph. The following week Heneghan threw a career-high four touchdown passes to send Dartmouth to a 29-26 win at Sacred Heart, and he capped his tenure in Hanover with a wild 54-44 triumph over Princeton. He finished his career fourth on the Big Green all-time charts in both passing yards (4,900) and total yards (5,289).

Heneghan is scheduled to report to a rookie mini-camp on Friday.

Note: Dartmouth had two players sign as undrafted free agents last year — Charlie Miller (Jacksonville Jaguars) and Folarin Orimolade (Los Angeles Rams).
