Newport hires head coach

Newport High School has found a varsity football coach.

Newport athletic director Jeff Miller said he has hired Dennis Borcuk Jr. to run the school’s football program. Borcuk replaces Rich Boone, who resigned following the 2017 season.

Borcuk is a familiar name to Newport fans. He has been on the Newport staff for the last 12 seasons and spent the last eight seasons as the program’s junior varsity head coach. He graduated from Newport in 1997 and played in the Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl following his senior season. Borcuk was a two-way starter on a Larry Carle-coached team that beat Plymouth for the Division IV state championship in 1995.

Boone served as Newport’s head coach for two seasons, and guided the Tigers to the play0ffs each year.
