Washington earns CAA award

RICHMOND, Va. –University of New Hampshire running back Carlos Washington, Jr. was named the CAA Football Rookie of the Week on Monday. It is the first collegiate accolade for the redshirt freshman, and the first CAA Football award bestowed the Wildcats this season.

Washington, Jr. carried the ball 17 times for a career-high 179 yards and two touchdowns to lead UNH to a 34-0 victory against Villanova University at Villanova Stadium on Saturday. Those were the first two career scores for Washington, who averaged 10.5 yards per carry in the showdown between the Wildcats.

Washington – New Hampshire’s first 100-yard rusher of the season – set the tone early in the game with a 75-yard TD run on the first play from scrimmage to give UNH a 7-0 lead 12 seconds into the game. It was the team’s longest run since Nov. 17, 2012, when quarterback Andy Vailas had a 77-yard TD run vs. Towson University.  Also of note, the 75-yard score marked the longest run by a UNH running back since Sept. 1, 2011, when Nico Steriti had an 87-yard  touchdown run at Toledo.

Washington also scored on a 16-yard scamper that extended New Hampshire’s lead to 24-0 at 4:38 of the second quarter. He opened that four-play scoring drive with a 26-yard run – the fourth longest run by a Wildcat this season. He did a majority of his damage in the first half with nine rushes for 138 yards and two TDs.

Washington’s performance helped UNH record season highs in points (34), rushes (43), rushing yards (246) and yards per carry (5.7).
