Saint Anselm names captains

MANCHESTER – Saint Anselm football coach Joe Adam has named his team’s four captains in advance of the 2019 football season.

Quarterback Eric Fairweather (Londonderry, N.H.) becomes only the second student-athlete in team history to be selected as captain in three or more seasons (Geoff Raby, 1999-02). He is joined by rising senior Nicholas Fiorillo (Westford, Mass.), junior Ryan Sullivan (Stoughton, Mass.) and soon-to-be senior Franklin Holgate (Easton, Mass.).

“These men personify all the standards and expectations we have for our football team,” Adam said. “They instill confidence in their teammates, hold each other accountable and serve our community with an open heart. They follow in the footsteps of some great captains we have had on the Hilltop. Congratulations to all four of them, their families and those who have helped them to earn this honor.”

Fairweather fired a career-best 13 touchdowns last season, throwing for just shy of 2,000 yards in nine contests for the Hawks. The program’s all-time leader in career yards per rush (5.04), Fairweather has rushed for 1,815 career yards and has scored 22 touchdowns carrying the ball, ranking fourth all-time in each statistic.

As a junior, Fiorillo set career-high marks with 26 catches for 298 yards, reeling in his first collegiate touchdown against Merrimack on Oct. 20. He made at least five catches in four games on the season, and had 70-plus yard games against Stonehill and Merrimack. Fiorillo is averaging just shy of 10 yards per catch in 19 games with the Hawks.

Sullivan averaged 11.6 tackles for the Hawks in nine games, the sixth-best average by any student-athlete competing in NCAA Division II last season. His 104 tackles on the season make him only the second student-athlete in team history to break the century mark in takedowns. His 5.9 solo tackles per game stands as the second-most in the NE10. He set the single-game team record with 20 tackles at Southern Conn. St. on Sept. 29.

Holgate has played in 13 games in his career, reeling in eight catches for 100 yards. Last season, Holgate recorded his first collegiate touchdown against Stonehill on Sept. 8.

Saint Anselm opens its 21st season of modern-day varsity football at home on Friday, Sept. 6, taking on California (Pa.) at 6 p.m. under the lights at Grappone Stadium.
