Shrine Camp: Day 3

66th Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl

New Hampshire coach Bill Raycraft seems to like everything about the defense he and his staff are assembling for Saturday’s Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl. What does he like best about that unit? “Speed,” Raycraft said. “Like Windham football, we like to create a little chaos with our speed. Our linebackers morph into defensive linemen at times. Linebacker is probably our strength.” … Raycraft said he expects 90 percent of his players to play on one side of the ball in this year’s game, which will be played Saturday (5:30 p.m.) at Castleton (Vt.) University. Two players who could go both ways are Manchester Memorial’s Tyrique Noel (defensive back and wingback) and Keene’s Keegan Murphy (center and defensive line). … Tuesday was media day at Castleton. The players had the chance to meet patients from the Shriners’ Hospitals and learn even more about why the Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl is played. “We had a chance to interact with the patients,” Raycraft said. “The New Hampshire guys really represented the state well.” … Vermont extended its winning streak to three games with a 24-13 victory last year. New Hampshire leads the series 47-17-2. … Much of New Hampshire’s morning practices Tuesday were spent on special teams. He said 95 percent of the team’s offense has been installed. … New Hampshire is scheduled to practice at 5:30 a.m., 8:15 a.m., 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday. “I think we’ll know a lot more about this team after another day of practice,” Raycraft said. “We’re going to do a little more contact (Wednesday), so we’ll certainly know more by tomorrow night.” … The 2012 New Hampshire team holds the Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl record for points scored in a game (62). Hanover’s Dan Gorman made eight point-after kicks in that victory.
