Brosmer collects CAA honor

University of New Hampshire quarterback Max Brosmer (Roswell, Ga.) was named the CAA Football Rookie of the Week as well as recipient of the New England Football Writers/Grinold Chapter Division I Gold Helmet Award on Monday.

Brosmer recorded career highs in completions (25), passing yards (276), touchdown passes (three), completion percentage (78.1%) and passer efficiency rating (175.26) to lead UNH to a 28-20 come-from-behind home win against No. 11 Villanova University on Saturday.

With New Hampshire trailing 20-7 at halftime, Brosmer was a perfect 10-for-10 for 132 yards and two TDs in the second half to engineer the comeback.

On UNH’s first possession of the third quarter, he had a pair of 15-yard completions to lead the Wildcats to a touchdown drive that lifted the ‘Cats within 20-14 at 10:57. Then on New Hampshire’s next drive, Brosmer completed back-to-back passes of 30 and 31 yards, the second of which was a TD pass to Dylan Laube (Westhampton, N.Y.) to give UNH a 21-10 lead at 5:34.

Brosmer connected with Laube for another touchdown – this time from 21 yards – to extend UNH’s lead to 28-20 at 8:49 of the fourth quarter. Still leading by eight points, New Hampshire began its next drive at the UNH 11 with 5:35 remaining. On a 3rd-and-3 play from the UNH 27, Brosmer’s seven-yard pass extended the drive at 2:58; that completion allowed the Wildcats to run another minute off the clock.

The rookie signal caller gave UNH momentum early in the game. One play after a 27-yard completion, Brosmer found Brian Espanet (Hopedale, Mass.) for a 15-yard TD that gave New Hampshire a 7-0 lead at 10:13 of the first quarter.

Brosmer has been named CAA Football Rookie of the Week three times; he was previously honored Sept. 23 and Oct. 14.
