Needing a victory to have any chance of qualifying for the Division I playoffs, Pinkerton beat Bedford, last year’s Division I champion, 16-7 Friday night in Derry.

That victory plus Goffstown’s 35-21 triumph over Timberlane handed Pinkerton the No. 4 seed in the North/South bracket. The Astros (6-3) will open the playoffs at No. 1 Londonderry (9-0). Had Pinkerton lost Friday’s game its season would have been over.

Brandon Roy kicked three field goals for the Astros, who also scored on a 75-yard pass from quarterback Jeff Potvin to halfback Brady Day. Roy’s field goals came from 24, 24 and 27 yards.

Pinkerton was also the No. 4 seed when it knocked off top-seeded Londonderry in last year’s first round.

The Londonderry/Pinkerton winner will face either second-seeded Goffstown (7-2) or third-seeded Salem (7-2) in the North/South championship game.
