Newfound searching for head coach

Last year was Ray Kershaw’s fifth season as Newfound Regional’s varsity football coach. It was also his final season as Newfound’s head coach.

Kershaw resigned earlier this month, saying it was time for him to pursue other opportunities.

Newfound reached the Division IV semifinals in 2018, and the Bears were awarded the NHIAA Sportsmanship Award in 2019.

“I went back and forth about it,” Kershaw said. “I just felt it was time to move on and look for a different challenge — look for something new. That was the only reason. We’ll just have to see what opens up, but I didn’t want to wait and see what opens up (and then resign). I didn’t feel that would be fair to the program.

“I enjoyed working for Pete (former Newfound athletic director Pete Cofran) and I really like Alex (current AD Alex Sobolov). I feel in his hands, Newfound athletics are in great shape.”

Kershaw also served as Mascoma Regional’s head coach from 2010 to 2013. The Royals finished the 2009 season with 12 healthy bodies, but reached the Division VI championship game in Kershaw’s third season as the program’s head coach. Mascoma lost to Franklin in the title game that season and finished with an 8-3 record.

Kershaw was named New Hampshire’s head coach for the 2013 Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl, and guided New Hampshire to a 43-0 victory over Vermont that summer. He spent two seasons as an assistant coach on Paul Castonia’s staff at Plymouth State, and was an assistant at Proctor Academy for five years (2004-2009) before he was hired at Mascoma.

“The (participation) numbers kept going up (at Newfound) until COVID,” Kershaw said. “Whoever takes over will just have to keep trying to get the kids to come out and play.

“I really enjoyed coaching at Newfound, and the support we received from the administration and the community.”
