Newfound turns to Parsons

The Newfound Regional varsity football job was a good fit for Zach Parsons for several reasons: the school is close to his Campton home, his work schedule with the U.S. Postal Service allowed him to devote the necessary hours to the position, and he found coaching at the high school level appealing.

It probably helped that Parsons and Newfound athletic director Alex Sobolov were roommates when both attended Plymouth State University,

Parsons, who spent eight seasons as an assistant coach under Paul Castonia at Plymouth State, was hired as Newfound’s head coach earlier this month. He replaces Ray Kershaw, who resigned in March.

“Plymouth State was a good experience and I learned a lot — both offense and defense — but it was kind of time to move on,” Parsons said. “I was looking to expand my reponsibiities. I didn’t coach last year. Definitely itching to get back in the game.”

Parsons, 32, said his biggest challenge will be getting the best athletes at Newfound to participate in football.

“Numbers are a big concern, but that’s kind of high school football in general,” he said. “Getting new players — kids who maybe didn’t play middle school football, or didn’t play last year for whatever reason — is going to be a huge thing. So that’s going to be my biggest focus … making it something that kids are going to be excited for and want to come out.”

Parsons, who played football at Plymouth State from 2007 to 2011, is coaching track at Newfound this spring. After he graduated from college, Parsons spent one season as an assistant football coach at Northhampton (Mass.) High School, his alma mater. He hooked on with the Plymouth State program the following year.
