Griffith on Rice watch list

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard defensive tackle Thor Griffith has been named to the 2021 Stats Perform FCS Jerry Rice Award Watch List, which is presented to the national freshman of the year in college football’s Division I subdivision.

A native of Portsmouth, N.H., Griffith is one of 22 players to land on the watch list and the lone representative from the Ivy League.

Griffith has seen action in all six games, totaling 12 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, the third-most sacks on the team (3.0) and one forced fumble. The defensive tackle is part of a defensive line unit that has held opponents to 278 yards rushing (46.3 ypg; No. 1 nationally) and 64 total points on the year (11.7 ppg; No. 3 nationally). Griffith has also helped the Crimson rank first in the FCS in team passing efficiency defense (93.88) and team sacks (4.83).

The Rice Award, now in its 11th season, is named for the legendary Hall of Fame wide receiver. Past recipients include Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp (Eastern Washington), Arizona Cardinals running back Chase Edmonds (Fordham) and San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance (North Dakota State).

Griffith and his Harvard teammates return to action on Saturday, when they play host to Dartmouth at noon.
