UNH’s Silver earns CAA award

RICHMOND, Va. – Josiah Silver (Hampton, Va.), a freshman defensive end on the University of New Hampshire football team, was named the CAA Football Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.

Silver recorded a career- and game-high 11 tackles, including personal bests of 5.0 tackles for loss and 4.0 sacks, as well as two forced fumbles in UNH’s 28-3 loss at the University of Rhode Island on Nov. 13.

On the second play of the fourth quarter, Silver strip-sacked URI quarterback Kasim Hill for a loss of 9 yards and teammate Duval Paul recovered the fumble to stop the Rams’ drive at the UNH 35 yard line.

Silver recorded another strip-sack on Rhode Island’s next possession to end that Rams’ drive at the UNH 41. He recorded his first sack of the day on URI’s third possession, and that tackle on a third-and-9 play forced the Rams to punt.

For the season, Silver ranks seventh in the nation with 10.5 sacks, 10th with 16.5 tackles for loss and fourth in forced fumbles with five. He also has a team-high 68 total tackles with 35 solo stops and 33 assisted tackles.

Silver was named to the watch list for the 2021 Stats Perform Jerry Rice Award, which is presented annually to the national freshman of the year in FCS football, on Oct. 27.
