No. 6: Bishop Guertin 17, Salem 14

All defense in the first half. Mostly offense after that.

After two quarters of scoreless football, the Cardinals grabbed a 17-point lead in the fourth. The Cards had to sweat it out, however, as the Blue Devils scored twice in the final five minutes before BG was able to run out the clock and earn a 17-14 victory.

BG opened the scoring when defensive lineman Jacob Baker tacked halfback Aidan McDonald in the end zone for a safety. That seemed to spark the Cardinals’ offense as BG scored on its next two possessions. First QB Matt Santosuosso scored on a 1-yard run. Then, following a Salem fumble, BG put together a 14-play, 81-yard scoring drive capped by Charlie Bellavance’s 10-yard touchdown run. The two-point conversion made it 17-0 with 5:18 to play.

Salem made things interesting when QB Noah Mustapha connected with McDonald for a 71-yard TD pass, and then scored again when McDonald (18 carries, 140 yards) punctuated an 11-play, 78-yard drive with an 11-yard TD run with 1:21 to play.

BG was able to chew up the rest of the time on the Stellos Stadium clock to secure the victory. Salem was plagued by turnovers, which inlcuded fumbles on the BG 23, the BG 3 and the BG 21.
