NHFR Team of the Week: Souhegan

NHFR TEAM OF THE WEEK
Souhegan Sabers

Running back JJ Bright rushed for 108 yards and three touchdowns on eight carries to help Souhegan defeat rival Milford 41-14 in Amherst on Friday night. Bright scored on runs of 15, 19 and 10 yards.

The Sabers took advantage of short fields to score on two one-play drives – a 34-yard pass, and a 10-yard run – and also went 94 yards in just over a minute to take a 20-6 lead with 11.6 seconds remaining in the first half.

Souhegan quarterback Romy Jain completed 7 of 10 passes for 155 yards and two touchdowns, both of which were caught by wide receiver Madux McGrath.

“We have a lot of athletes and we have to get the ball in their hands,” Souhegan coach Robin Bowkett said. “It’s a lot of fun to watch them run and watch them catch. And when you have a quarterback anywhere, especially in the state of New Hampshire, that’s super helpful too. And we have a great one.”

The Sabers (2-0) scored on their first four possessions against Milford (1-1).

Souhegan ended the scoring on Carson Behn’s 9-yard run and Joe Bernasconi’s fifth PAT.

Bright also had a team-high 13 tackles. Defensive back Charlie Maroun added nine tackles and also had an interception.

The victory moved Souhegan to the No. 10 spot in this week’s Union Leader Power Poll. The Sabers are the only non-Division I team in the top 10.
