Western Michigan QB likely to return

Western Michigan coach Tim Lester said Wednesday that starting quarterback Jack Salopek returned to practice this week and will likely play against the University of New Hampshire on Saturday night (6).

Salopek, a redshirt freshman, did not play in last Saturday’s 34-6 loss to San Jose State because of an upper-body injury. He completed 52 of 97 passes for 522 yards and one touchdown (one interception) in Western Michigan’s first three games this season.

“He looks good,” Lester said. “All signs point towards that he’ll be playing again. He wanted to play last week bad. That was a decision we had to make, what was best for us for the season — not that night, but for the season. I think the rest has been good to him. We still have a couple days. If he keeps on the mend and trending the way he’s trending I think he’ll be out there, but Marejohn’s (backup QB Marejohn Hrabowski) played. Treyson (No. 3 quarterback Treyson Bourguet) has been getting some reps too. We’re trying to get as many guys ready as possible, but obviously hoping that (Salopek) will be out  there on Saturday.”

Hrabowski, a 6-foot-2, 229-pound redshirt freshman, started against San Jose State and was 4 of 8 passing for 56 yards. He’s considered to be a run-first quarterback.

“You got a passer and you got a runner,” UNH defensive tackle Niko Kvietkus said. “We have no idea which one we’re gonna face. Either way we’ll be ready. “

Without Salopek, Western Michigan was limited to 201 yards of offense (130 rushing, 71 passing) against San Jose State.  The team’s only touchdown came on a 90-yard touchdown return.

“With a new quarterback we never found a rhythm,” Lester said.
