MASCAC honors Derry’s Wilson

PLYMOUTH – Junior Willie Lombard (Bridgewater, Mass.) and sophomore Evan Wilson (Derry, N.H.) had key performances in Plymouth State University’s 42-7 win at Fitchburg State University on Saturday earning both recognition by the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) with spots on the Weekly Honor Roll.

Wilson led the Panthers with seven tackles, including four solo stops, in the win. The linebacker added one tackle for a loss, one forced fumble and one recovered fumble. With PSU already leading 28-0 late in the second quarter, Wilson ripped the ball loose from the Fitchburg quarterback, then jumped on the ball to give the Panthers possession at the Fitchburg State 12-yard line, setting up Lombard’s 10-yard TD run. Wilson and the rest of the defense limited the Falcons to just 104 yards of offense until a 79-yard drive late in the fourth quarter when the game was already well in hand.

Wilson has been everywhere for the PSU defense as his 9.2 tackles per game lead the team and rank third in the MASCAC. He has 55 total tackles, including five for a loss, while his 33 solo tackles are seven more than the next highest total.

Lombard continued an impressive season after rushing for 110 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the first half of the decisive win. Lombard needed just 11 carries to crack the century mark, averaging exactly 10.0 yards per carry while adding TD runs of two and ten yards as the Panthers relied on a heavy ground attack for the win. Lombard set an early tone, ripping off gains of 21, 5 and 12 yards on the opening drive as PSU racked up 385 yards rushing in the victory.

His big game bumped up his rushing yards per game average by more than six yards, as he ranks fifth in the league with 66.3 yards per game. His six rushing TDs are third most in the MASCAC, just one behind the leaders.

Plymouth State (5-1, 3-1 MASCAC) is on the road again Saturday for a noon MASCAC clash at Worcester State.
