Portsmouth/Oyster River

Portsmouth/Oyster River improved its playoff position by knocking off Timberlane 14-7 Friday night.

The victory improved Portsmouth/Oyster River’s record to 5-4 (5-3 against NHHIAA competition) and earned the ClipperCats the No. 9 seed for the Division I playoffs. It also denied Timberlane (7-2) a bye in the first round of this weekend’s Division I playoffs.

Quarterback Aidan Thomas connected with Gunner Jackson for a 56-yard touchdown pass that broke a 7-7 tie in the fourth quarter. Thomas completed 13 of 24 passes for 248 yards and two touchdowns in the game. He helped open the scoring with a 37-yard TD pass to Daniel Doherty early in the second quarter. Doherty caught three passes for 90 yards in the win.

Portsmouth limited Timberlane to 141 yards of offense, much of which came on a 65-yard pass from quarterback Dom Coppetta to Matthew Williams that set up Coppetta’s 1-yard TD run.

Portsmouth/Oyster River will open the playoffs at eighth-seeded Merrimack on Friday night (6:30 p.m.).
