Plymouth State climbs to fifth in poll

PLYMOUTH – With the biggest game in recent history looming, Plymouth State University moved up one spot in the sixth Grinold Chapter New England Division III Football Coaches’ Poll that was released on Monday afternoon.

The Panthers, up to fifth in the New England poll, topped Mass. Maritime on the road last Saturday, 21-7, to set up a de facto MASCAC title game at home on Saturday.

Plymouth State (8-1, 6-1 MASCAC) will face league-leading UMass Dartmouth (8-1, 7-0 MASCAC) in a Senior Day contest, with the winner capturing the MASCAC crown and earning the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Corsairs occupy the number three spot in the poll and lead the MASCAC in several offensive categories.

Unbeaten Endicott (9-0) remained in the top spot with all 11 first place votes and 110 points, while Trinity remained second. A third MASCAC team, WestConn, sits seventh.

Plymouth State’s defense forced three takeaways to help the Panthers top the Bucs on Saturday. Senior Luc Normandeau (Dover, N.H.) earned a spot on the MASCAC Weekly Honor Roll after posted a team-best seven tackles, all solo, to go with a forced fumble and fumble recovery.

The New England Division III Football Poll is presented by the Jack Grinold/Eastern Massachusetts Chapter of the National Football Foundation. A panel representing all five New England Division III playing conferences serves as voters in this year’s poll, with rankings being released weekly through November 14th.
