Timberlane Owls
Sixth-seeded Timberlane overcame a 14-point deficit with just over seven minutes to play and extended its season by beating third-seeded Exeter 29-28 in Saturday’s Division I quarterfinals.
Timberlane quarterback Dom Coppeta scored from a yard away with 37.8 seconds remaining and then capped the scoring by running in the two-point conversion.
Exeter (7-3) broke a 14-14 tie on Aidan McGinley’s 2-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter, then added to its lead on a 24-yard TD run by quarterback Evan Pafford.
Timberlane responded with a 45-yard TD pass from Coppeta to Jaden Mwangi with 7:03 left. Mwangi finished the game with five receptions for 143 yards and two touchdowns, as he also hauled in a 36-yard score in the second quarter.
Timberlane freshman running back Liam Corman scampered 68 yards for a score to tie the game at 14-14 with 8:09 left in the third quarter.
Coppeta completed eight of 11 passes for 193 yards to go with 59 rushing yards.
Exeter jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter after Pafford threw touchdown passes of 5 and 7 yards to running back Ethan Moss. Pafford completed 9 of 14 passes for 74 yards. Desmond Rugg led Exeter’s 237-yard rushing attack with 85 yards on 13 carries.
Timberlane (9-2) will be at home against 10th-seeded Bedford (8-3) in the Division I semifinals. That game will be played Friday in Plaistow (7 p.m.).
