Pelham High School received 139 yards rushing and three touchdowns from fullback Ethan Demmons and extended the program’s winning streak to 30 games by beating Souhegan 35-6 in Saturday’s Division II championship game at Bedford High School.
Dom Herrling added a TD run (21 yards) and a 20-yard touchdown catch for the second-seeded Pythons, who led 14-0 after one quarter and 21-6 at halftime.
It was the third consecutive championship for Pelham, which spent the 2020 and 2021 seasons in Division III.
“Give Souhegan credit,” Pelham coach Tom Babaian said. “They played us tough throughout the game. That being said, I am extremely proud of our players. They converted critical third and fourth downs, and took advantage of their scoring opportunitiess.
“Defensively, the withstood the passing attack of Souhegan, stopped them is several high-leverage situations and forced turnovers that ultimately put us in a position to win the game. Our special teams units, per usual, gave us favorable field position and were also able to force Souhegan to start deep in (its) own territory.”
Fourth-seeded Souhegan (10-2) scored on a 5-yard pass from quarterback Romy Jain to Charlie Maroun in the second quarter. Jain was 12 of 18 for 154 yards, but was intercepted three times. Souhegan turned the ball over five times in the loss.
Alex Carroll rushed for a game-high 144 yards and 13 carries as Pelham finished the season with a 12-0 record.
Charlie Maroun and Cole Manning each had five receptions for the Sabers, who dropped a 28-21 decision to Pelham during the regular season.
“Again, I am extremely proud of this group of players,” Babaian said. “They deftly bore the weight of expectation throughout the season and rose to the occasion when called upon. This experience and the lessons they learned along the way will serve them well and provide them something they can draw upon in their adult lives. That’s what means most to me.”
