MASCAC honors PSU players

PLYMOUTH – Seniors Manny Sanchez (Hartford, Conn.) and Luc Normandeau (Dover, N.H.) took home Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) weekly honors after leading the Plymouth State University football team to a 21-20 win over Husson in the New England Bowl on Saturday.

Sanchez was named Co-Offensive Player of the Week, while Normandeau took home Defensive Player of the Week honors.

Sanchez rushed for 131 yards and a touchdown to help the Panthers erase a 20-0 deficit to claim the New England Bowl title. Sanchez registered 30 carries for a 4.4 yards per carry average, scoring the game winning touchdown with less than six minutes remaining. He accounted for 45 of the team’s 53 yards on the game-winning drive.

Sanchez ends the season with exactly 900 yards rushing, averaging 90.0 yards per game and 4.6 yards per carry. He finished with a team-best 12 rushing TDs and wraps up his career 10th among Plymouth State’s all-time leading rushers with 1,674 yards despite playing just two full seasons.

Normandeau had a hand in half of the defense’s four takeaways in the come-from-behind thriller. He laid out to snag an interception on the Eagles’ opening drive and forced a fumble early in the second quarter. The defensive back finished with four tackles, including three solo stops and one tackle behind the line of scrimmage.

Normandeau ended the year fourth on the Panthers with 54 total tackles, including 37 solo stops. His 5.5 tackles for loss were third-most on the team, while he added an interception, three forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. He ends his career with 119 tackles, three interceptions and nine pass breakups.

Plymouth State ended the season with a 9-2 mark to match the most wins since the 2017 team. PSU’s win over Husson was the team’s first bowl victory since capturing the 2007 ECAC North Atlantic Bowl, and first postseason win since the 2008 NEFC title game.
