Top 10 Games from 2022: No. 5

TOP 10 NHIAA GAMES FROM 2022
No. 5: Portsmouth/Oyster River 18, Memorial 12

The No. 5 game on our list illustrated how important the kicking game can be in high school football.

Manchester Memorial trailed Portsmouth/Oyster River 12-6 until Memorial quarterback Connor McFarland tied the game on a 5-yard run with 1:31 to play. Instead of taking the lead on the point-after kick, however, Memorial’s PAT attempt was blocked and the game remained tied.

Memorial went on offense first in overtime, but the possession ended after the first play when a McFarland pass was tipped by Portsmouth/Oyster River linebacker Brady Kilroy and intercepted by Charlie Turner. Quarterback Aiden Thomas scored from the 10 on Portsmouth/Oyster River’s first offensive play in overtime to give the ClipperCats the victory.

Portsmouth/Oyster River opened the scoring on a 40-yard punt return by Nick Smith, but a bad snap prevented the ClipperCats from converting the PAT. Portsmouth’s other TD came on a 32-yard pass from Thomas to Daniel Doherty that gave the ClipperCats a 12-6 lead.

Thomas completed 6 of 15 passes for 86 yards in the win. He also ganed 74 yards on 14 carries. Kilroy recorded two sacks for the ClipperCats.
