Top 10 Games from 2022: No. 3

No. 3: Souhegan 29, Gilford/Belmont 28

The 2022 playoffs featured several comeback victories, and this was one of them.

Fourth-seeded Souhegan trailed by 14 points at halftime, but rallied in the second half to post a 29-28 victory and earn a spot in the Division II championship game.

Souhegan quarterback Romy Jain scored the second of his two 1-yard TD runs to make it 28-20 late in the third quarter. After an offside call on the PAT Souhegan coach Robin Bowkett pulled his kicking team off the field and sent out the offense to attempt a two-point conversion.

Running back JJ Bright cut Souhegan’s deficit to 28-22 when he scored on the conversion attempt. Bright added a 66-yard TD run on Souhegan’s next possession and Joe Bernasconi made the PAT to end the scoring with 6:25 left in the fourth. Bright gained 147 of his 235 rushing yards in the second half.

Gilford/Belmont QB Isaiah Reese (156 yards on 28 carries) and running back Michael Kitto (111 yards on 28 carries) each scored two touchdowns in the first half to help the top-seeded Golden Eagles build a 28-14 halftime lead, but Souhegan didn’t allow a point in the second half.

Kitto scored a 4-yard run on the first drive of the game and, following a fumble, added a 6-yard TD run to help make it 14-0 with 3:49 left in the opening quarter. At that point Souhegan had yet to run an offensive play.

Jain (8-for-13, 113 yards) scored to trim Souhegan’s deficit to 14-7, but Reese answered with a 22-yard TD run. The PAT handed Gilford/Belmont a 21-7 lead.

Bright’s 53 yard TD run plus the point-after kick made it a 21-14 game, but Reese’s second TD run came from 35 yards away. The PAT handed Gilford/Belmont a 28-14 halftime lead.

Souhegan’s strong second half allowed the Sabers to hand the Golden Eagles their only loss of the season.
