Saint Anselm releases schedule

MANCHESTER — The Saint Anselm College football team announced its 2023 schedule on Friday.

Saint Anselm will meet 10 opponents in 2023, starting on Thursday, Aug. 31 at Millersville University and will run through Saturday, Nov. 4 against Franklin Pierce University at Grappone Stadium. The Hawks play their seven-game Northeast-10 Conference schedule and have two other non-conference home games against Tiffin University (Ohio) and Post University in September.

Head Coach Joe Adam, who enters his eighth season at the helm of the Saint Anselm football program, welcomed more than 20 student-athletes to the Hilltop following the National Signing Day in early February. Saint Anselm is currently set to return a large percentage of its roster from last season. In 2022, the Hawks posted a 6-4 record overall, winning as many games for the first time since the 2014 campaign.

“We are excited to play six home games in front of our great fan base,” Adam said. “We return 89 percent of our team from last season and carry an entirely full roster into the fall. Our expectations are high.”

Following the team’s first trip to Millersville, Saint Anselm will play it home opener Sept. 9 when Tiffin comes to the Granite State in Week 2. The matchup will be the second meeting between the program and the first at Grappone Stadium.

Saint Anselm opens its conference slate in Week 3 against American International on Sept. 16. The programs have met 27 times all-time following the two matchups in the 2022 season as the Hawks posted a 56-7 win on Sept. 10, 2022 before closing the season with a 27-20 win over the Yellow Jackets on Nov. 12, 2022.

The Hawks battle a pair of Connecticut opponents in Weeks 4 and 5. Saint Anselm hosts Post on Saturday, Sept. 23 to conclude a three-game home stand before heading to Southern Connecticut State on Saturday, Sept. 30. The Hawks collected one win apiece against the Eagles and the Owls in 2022.

Saint Anselm opens October with three games against the top three teams from the 2022 NE10 standings, starting against Bentley on the Hilltop on Saturday, Oct. 7. The team will then hit the road to battle New Haven on Oct. 14 and Assumption on Oct. 21. The Hawks dropped the 2022 meeting to, at the time, No. 24 New Haven by a 21-10 score and later suffered a 21-12 loss to the 2022 NE10 Champions in Assumption.

Following the back-to-back road games, the Hawks host Pace and Franklin Pierce in their final two games of the regular season Oct. 28 and Saturday, Nov. 4. Saint Anselm dropped a tightly contested road game to Pace on Oct. 29, 2022, 17-14. In last season’s meeting against the in-state foe Ravens, Saint Anselm posted its first shutout of an NCAA Division II opponent since the 2002 season.

In 2022, the Hawks finished fourth in NCAA Division II in first downs defense (142), fifth in fumble recoveries (15), sixth in turnovers gained (28), 13th in passing yards allowed (457), 17th in scoring defense (16.8), 17th in team passing efficiency defense (105.18), and 22nd in third-down conversion percentage defense (30.7 percent).

Saint Anselm opened the season with a win in each of its first four games, which was last accomplished in 2014. The Hawks posted records of 3-2 when playing from the friendly confines of Grappone Stadium and on the road, bringing them to their final record of 6-4.

The Hawks had eight student-athletes featured on the 2022 NE10 football All-Conference rosters, led by senior Anthony Brown (Belton, Texas) who was named to the All-NE10 First Team. Saint Anselm placed five student-athletes on the Second Team and two on the All-Rookie Team.
