Bishop Brady turns to Clauss

A familiar face will be running the show on the Bishop Brady sideline this fall, as Nashua resident Rob Clauss has replaced Brendan Johnson as the program’s head coach.

Clauss, 57, was formerly the head coach at ConVal, and has also served as an assistant coach at Nashua South and Alvirne. He was hired by Bishop Brady last month.

Clauss spent two years on the staff at Dracut (Mass.) High School after he left ConVal, and didn’t coach last season.

“I made the decision earlier this year that I really wanted to coach,” Clauss said. “I attended parochial school in New York and there’s a very closeness to it that I like. At a school like this you’re not just a coach. People all have to pull together to do everything.”

The Bishop Brady job opened up when Johnson decided to become the offensive coordinator at Merrimack Valley.

Clauss said increasing participation in the football program is high on his priority list.

“Right now we’re at 27 (players),” he said. “If we can get to 30 my first year that would be great. Eventually I’d like to get it up to 40 so we can bring back a sub-varsity program.

“At a school like this we need three-sport athletes. We’re going to make football fun for them.”
