MASCAC recognizes PSU players

PLYMOUTH – The duo of juniors Willie Lombard (Bridgewater, Mass.) and Evan Wilson (Derry, N.H.) was honored by the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) with inclusion on the Weekly Honor Roll after their performances in Plymouth State Unviersity’s 40-21 victory over Fitchburg State University on Saturday.

Lombard was dually recognized both on offense and special teams, picking up recognition for the third straight week and fourth time this season, while Wilson was selected for the third time this fall.

Lombard ripped off a career-high 95-yard kickoff return touchdown to get the Panthers’ rolling. After Fitchburg State took a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter, he hauled in the ensuing kickoff, broke a pair of tackles and streaked through the coverage and up the left sideline to the end zone. He finished the day with 107 yards rushing, clearing the century mark for the second straight week, while averaging an impressive 7.1 yards per carry and posting 214 all-purpose yards.

Wilson notched game-highs with 14 tackles and eight solo stops to lead the PSU defense. He set an early tone with three straight tackles on the Falcons’ opening drive and finished with six tackles in the first quarter alone. He made three straight solo stops early in the third quarter to set up a blocked punt, that the Panthers recovered for a touchdown to help put the game out of reach.

Lombard ranks fourth in the MASCAC with 78.2 rushing yards per game, while his 5.6 yards per carry is third-best in the league. His 602 kickoff return yards are easily the most in the MASCAC and he is just one of four players to register a kickoff return.

Wilson leads the conference with 42 solo tackles and ranks second in total tackles with 63. He also ranks among the league leaders in sacks, tackles for a loss and fumble recoveries.

The Panthers host Worcester State in another MASCAC game on Saturday at noon. At halftime, Plymouth State will formally dedicate the Coach Lou Desloges Press Box in memory of the longtime coach.
