Binney leaves Fall Mountain

Add Fall Mountain Regional to the list of NHIAA football programs that will begin the 2024 season with a new head coach.

Orion Binney, who attended Fall Mountain, announced recently that he is leaving the program after serving as head coach for the last seven seasons. Binney said he stepped down to pursue another job opportunity.

Binney took over a Fall Mountain program that was coming off back-to-back winless seasons in 2016 and 2017. The Wildcats advanced to the Division IV state championship game in both 2019 and 2021, and then moved to Division III for the 2022 season.

“(Rebuilding) takes a lot of work,” Binney said. “You have to recruit the hallways and make the kids want to play football. I told the players, ‘If you do the things the right way we can compete.’ It starts with work in the offseason.

“At Fall Mountain we couldn’t afford to have someone be a great one-sport athlete. Basketball players have to help us in football. I think the easiest way to do that (recruit) is to go to other games.”

One of Fall Mountain’s highlights under Binney came in 2021, when the Wildcats upset Newport 21-6 in the Division IV semifinals after losing to Newport 35-0 during the regular season.

Binney said Jim Tremblay will replace him as Fall Mountain’s head coach. Tremblay was an assistant on Binney’s staff last season.

The Wildcats are coming off a 5-4 season and will begin their 2024 Division III schedule Sept. 6 at Stevens. The first day of practice is Friday
