No. 2: Monadnock 28, Laconia 27

Second-seeded Monadnock had the lead for only 16 seconds of this Division III quarterfinal, but survived a scare from seventh-seeded Laconia to extend its season.

With time running out, senior quarterback Kaden Smith connected with Tucker Johns  for a 5-yard touchdown pass to trim Laconia’s lead to 27-26. With the season on the line, the Huskies opted to go for two points and the win.

Koby Kidney took the snap, sprinted to his right found his way into the end zone to give Monadnock a one-point lead.

Laconia completed a hook-and-lateral pass to cross midfield and set up a Hail Mary chance, but Carter Jones’ final pass fell to the ground hit the ground as time expired.

The Huskies had to march 80 yards with 4:09 remaining after Jones gave Laconia a 27-20 lead with a 6-yard keeper for a touchdown.

The Sachems scored on their first three drives and had a 20-6 lead in the second quarter. Laconia received two 40-yard TD run from Ryan Walsh in the first half, and a 2-yard TD run by Jacob Tryon.

The Huskies made it a one-score game when Nick Ball scored on a 38-yard TD run with 3:54 left in the first half. Laconia had a 20-14 advantage at halftime.

After Monadnock went three-and-out to open the third, Chase Elliott intercepted a Jones pass, and Kidney capped an eight-play, 35-yard drive with a 2-yard score. The conversion attempt failed leaving the game tied, 20-20.

Laconia drove 54 yards and took the lead on a Jones touchdown runs, but Monadnock regained the lead with 16 seconds to play.
