FOOTNOTES: Loss prevention

Comments from University of New Hampshire head coach Sean Goldrich on Monday’s CAA conference call:

— On Friday night’s 28-14 season-opening loss at UAlbany: “We didn’t come out fully ready to play. I think we hurt ourselves in a lot of areas. Didn’t play clean football. Penalties were a real struggle for us. The discipline for us wasn’t quite there. We obviously didn’t control the line of scrimmage, which it’s hard to go on the road in a conference game coming out of the gate and win if you can’t control the football and you can’t stop the run. We will be better. A lot of this stuff is correctible. I just think we didn’t settle into that game until we were a little too far behind, now we have to find a way to battle. We’re going to lean on the leaders here and the coaches here to get this thing up to speed, but long season. We know that. We have a lot of work to do.”

— On the four sacks his team allowed during the loss: “I think a lot of it was just eye discipline, whether it was in the front five or in the backfield. … A time or two the quarterback could have got himself out of some of those situations. Collectively, we showed it was a little bit new for all of us to kind of be in the pocket together, but all things we will build off of.”

— On UNH’s run defense, which allowed 374 yards on the ground: “Looking at the film our guys (were) pressing and trying to do too much. Guys not understanding their assignment necessarily and trying to make a play, which puts more stress on the second level. And when it comes down to simple football 101, we just didn’t tackle. We had a lot of opportunities to get off the field and we didn’t step up in those moments. … It wasn’t a lack of talent. I think we do have enough talent be able to go win in this conference, so we just have to do a better job of calibrating these guys and focusing on those things that are going to help us get up to speed in those moments.”

— On Delaware transfer Ja’Carree Kelly, who had six receptions for 123 yards and a touchdown in Friday’s loss: It was awesome to see. We knew he had it in him. He’s a competitive kid and obviously he can move around with the best of them. Was great to get him in some space and get his confidence up.”

— On the message to the team following Friday’s game: “The message is pretty simple. It’s a long season and we have to stay together. Right out of the gate we really wanted that one. It was an exciting environment and an important game for us to set the tempo for  the year. We didn’t play good enough. The thing is we have a lot of opportunities to make this thing right. We’re only going to get better as a team. We’ll get better as coaches and all those things, so the big message was stick together, keep pushing through, lean on each other.”
