Syracuse 66, UNH 3

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sophomore linebacker Trevor Barry (Elma, N.Y.) recorded a game-high 11 tackles in the University of New Hampshire football team’s 66-3 loss to Syracuse University at JMA Wireless Dome on Saturday afternoon.

Barry finished with three solo tackles and eight assisted for a total of 11, which included a sack. Senior Jackson Stone (Lebanon, N.H.) made a career-high eight tackles.

Senior quarterback Brooks Bentley (Venice, Fla.) completed 11 of 18 passes for 75 yards and an interception. Sophomore Tommy McLeish (Norfolk, Mass.) played the second half and was 4-for-8 for 24 yards and a lost fumble.

Senior running back Joquez Smith (Tampa, Fla.) had eight carries for 64 yards, including a long of 46 that set up the 46-yard field goal by sophomore kicker Lucas Glassburn (Windermere, Fla.).

Grad student running back Myles Thomason (Montclair, N.J.) had a team-high 76 all-purpose yards with 12 carries for 23 yards and seven catches for 53 yards.

Shavane Anderson Jr. led the Syracuse ground game with 10 carries for 102 yards and three touchdowns. Steve Angeli completed 20 of 29 passes for 263 yards and three TDs. Umari Hatcher was the top target with 147 yards and two touchdowns on eight catches.

UNH moves to 0-2 and Syracuse is 1-0.

FIRST HALF

  • On the first drive of the game, UNH’s defense held Syracuse to 26 yards and forced the Orange to punt when they could not convert 3rd-and-11.
  • The Orance scored a touchdown on its next six possessions, however, to build a 41-0 lead with 343 total yards of offense in the first half.
  • The Wildcats advanced into Syracuse territory in the closing minute and a 13-yard reception by Ja’Carree Kelly (Gainesville, Fla.) moved the ball to the SU 29. On the next play, Glassburn missed a 45-yard attempt wide left with six seconds on the clock.
  • Anderson rushed for 100 yards and three TDs in the first half.
SECOND HALF
  • On the opening drive of the second half, UNH’s punt was blocked and the ball went out of the back of the end zone for a safety and 43-0 score.
  • The Wildcats’ defense held the Orange to a trhee-and-out on the next possession.
  • Late in the third quarter, Syracuse kept the offense on the field for 4th-and-goal at the UNH 2, and Stone broke up the pass along the back line of the end zone to end the drive at 2:59.
  • New Hampshire then marched 70 yards – the bulk of which game on Smith’s 46-yard run up the middle – to the SU 28 and Glassburn split the uprights from 46 yards to make it 43-3 at 14:50.
UNH NOTEBOOK
  • Barry has been UNH’s top tackler each of the first two games of the season. He finished with a career-high 13 in the opener at UAlbany.
  • Stone surpassed his previous personal best of six tackles established last year at Ball State.
  • Matt Guidebeck (North Reading, Mass.) averaged 45.3 yards on seven punts with a season-long of 52 yards.
