FOOTNOTES: Stonehill rewind

Noteworthy items from University of New Hampshire coach Sean Goldrich during Monday’s CAA media call:

— On Saturday night’s 42-35 non-conference victory over Stonehill, which was his first win as UNH’s head coach: “There is a lot for us to clean up off the tape, but we have time to do it. Believe in my coaches, believe in these guys. We’ll keep putting out a better brand of ball.”

— On giving up 35 points: “When you turn on the tape it just seems like we’re off by one on every play. You’re trying to get 11 hats to the ball, we’re 10 out of 11 right now. The mistakes aren’t drastic. It’s not like we’re completely busting coverages or having people completely out of gaps. There is some technique stuff that needs to get cleaned up, but for the most part there’s definitely some things we can clean up to be better in that area. When one side of the ball is challenged, that’s when you test your culture to see if the other side can respond.”

— On running back Joquez Smith, a transfer from Temple who rushed for 122 yards and three TDs on 13 carries against Stonehill. Smith was named the CAA Offensive Player of the Week: “Awesome kid. Great for the locker room. Great for our culture. Plays hard. He’s selfless too. Doesn’t complain, and has earned himself a lot more touches. … Patient runner, competitive and bought in to what we’re doing here. It’s really good to see.”

— On Saturday’s game against Harvard: “This one is going to be a really big challenge for us, playing Harvard at home. They’re typically good on the offensive line, the defensive line, so we got our hands full for sure.

“It’s going to be a way for us to see what we’ve got against a playoff-caliber team, and a great way to build off that momentum from last week. They’ve been watching us heavily for the last three weeks. They’re gonna know a lot about who we are, but we have to make it about us and play clean football.”
