UNH Advance: Rhode Island

PRESSER POINTS

News and notes from the University of New Hampshire’s weekly press conference in advance of Saturday’s home game against Rhode Island (1 p.m.):

The Wildcats (2-7, 1-4 CAA) will be trying to end a three-game losing streak against a Rhode Island (5-4, 2-3) team that has won three of its last four. The Rams have won the last three meetings against the Wildcats.

“The challenge this week  has been, ‘Can we have more energy than the team across from us?'” UNH coach Sean Goldrich said. “Can we throw the record out the window and have a one-game season? If we can do that those things will allow us to be successful. Ultimately it’s going to come down to execution.”

UNH STATISTICS | URI STATISTICS | CAA STANDINGS

— Five of UNH’s nine games have been decided by seven points or less.

— URI coach Jim Fleming on UNH: “They’re a hard team to play at New Hampshire. Always have been. You gotta go up there and mind your Ps and Qs and make sure you’re playing your best football. … I see guys who are playing hard. I went over their team this morning and you’re looking at a 14-point loss to Albany, seven points to Sacred Heart. (North Carolina) A&T was a three-point game. Merrimack was a seven-point game. So they’ve been in very tight football games and that means they’re dangerous enough to flip the script and win a tight game. We’ve got our work cut out for us.”

— UNH sophomore linebacker Trevor Barry leads the FBS in tackles per game (12.1) and ranks third in solo tackles per game (6.22).

— Sophomore quarterback Tommy McLeish made his first collegiate start at quarterback in UNH’s last game, a 24-17 loss to Merrimack. He completed 17 of 44 passes for 318 yards and two touchdowns.

“The scout team prepared me really well,” McLeish said. “Those guys guys, they fly around every day so it wasn’t as big of a jump as you might think from practice to a game. The guys around me made plays. They got open. It was just a matter of me doing my job. getting them the ball. Then when you get into the flow of the game it’s still football. It’s the same game I’ve played my whole life.”

— The Wildcats are averaging 29.2 penalty yards per game in their last four games after averaging 78.0 penalty yards per game in their first five contests.

— URI wide receiver Marquis Buchanan has 3,969 career receiving yards, which is the most of any player in the program’s history. He’s fifth on the CAA’s career receptions list with 260 catches, and is also fifth in career receiving yards. His 27 TD catches rank fourth in URI history.

— UNH has been outscored 70-34 in the fourth quarter this season

— Tight end Colby Ramshaw had a 12-yard TD catch at Merrimack, which was the eighth touchdown catch of his career.
