CHaD Practice: West’s depth tested

CHaD NEW HAMPSHIRE EAST/WEST ALL-STAR GAME

PLYMOUTH STATE PROSPECT CAMP

When the players were selected for this year’s CHaD East-West All-Star Game, quarterback may have been the deepest position on the West roster. That depth was needed since Bedford’s Bennett Matthews and Trinity’s Ollie Service won’t play in Friday night’s game, which will be held at Saint Anselm College (6 p.m.). Matthews is gearing up for his freshman lacrosse season at Duke, and Service is nursing a shoulder injury as he gets ready to play college baseball at the University of Massachusetts. The West is still in good shape at that position as Nashua South’s Cody Jackson is expected to take most of the snaps. Jackson was a three-year starter for South, and guided the Panthers to the Division I semifinals last season. “He’s very accurate,” West coach Kip Jackson said. “Takes care of the ball.”  … The West will be seeking to win its sixth straight game, and leads the series 11-3.  “This year, probably more than ever, we have a lot of Division I and Division II (high school) kids, and not many from Division III and Division IV. “It’s too bad because we’ve had a lot of good Division III and Division IV players — at least on the West side.” … Jackson said Manchester Memorial defensive lineman Januel Pena Ramirez has been among the players who have stood out in practice thus far. “I knew he was good, but he’s going to be a problem (for the East),” Jackson said. “I think our defensive line is fairly strong.”  Jackson said special teams have been stressed during workouts. Trinity’s Connor Bishop will be the West’s kicker. …  Jackson said Nashua South’s Josh Tripp, a defensive back/wide receiver who will play college football at UMass, will play on both sides of the ball Friday.  … The West is scheduled to practice at Manchester West on Tuesday and Wednesday, and will have a walk-through at Saint Anselm College on Thursday. … “A lot will come down to special teams and turnovers,” Jackson said. “We gotta take care of the ball and win that third phase.” … Tickets for this year’s game can be purchased on the CHaD website.
