Spaulding selects Shea

Spaulding High School has selected John Shea to be the school’s varsity football coach. The announcement was made in a press release sent out by the school Wednesday, but hiring won’t become official until he receives school board approval in April.

Shea spent two seasons as the head coach at Cambridge (Mass.) Rindge and Latin. Cambridge had a 9-12 record in Shea’s two seasons. The Falcons finished 2-8 in 2011 and 7-4 in 2012. Shea also served as the head coach at Middleboro (Mass.) High School from 2008 to 2010.

The Spaulding job opened up when Jeff Hunt resigned last December after serving as the program’s head coach for three seasons. The Red Raiders had a 9-21 record under Hunt and made one playoff appearance (2013). Hunt became Spaulding’s fifth head coach in as many seasons when he was hired before the 2013 season.

If Shea is approved, he will become Spaulding’s ninth head coach since Hugo Bolin stepped down in 1997. Bolin guided the Red Raiders to five state championships. Spaulding has made three playoff appearances since Bolin resigned.
