UNH going with Knight

University of New Hampshire coach Sean McDonnell has named sophomore Trevor Knight as the team’s starting quarterback for Saturday night’s opener at San Diego State. Knight was battling senior captain Adam Riese for the starting job throughout the preseason.

“We’re gonna start Trevor Knight,” McDonnell said. “He won the competition. Both the guys were very close in everything they did. We just feel that Trevor — his athletic ability to escape (and) his athletic ability to run with the ball on certain quarterback-run plays — is gonna give us an opportunity to be a little bit more successful offensively. That being said, Adam Riese had his best camp ever. He’s playing his best football ever here at UNH. It’s a very tough decision when you have to tell one of those guys you’re not going, but I feel very comfortable with both of them.”

Knight, an Amherst resident, played in six games last season, when he completed 10 of 19 pass attempts for 124 yards and one touchdown.

San Diego State was a unanimous selection (29 votes) to win the Mountain West Conference’s West Division in the league’s preseason poll. The Aztecs will open the season against UNH on Saturday night (8:30) at Qualcomm Stadium.

“This is the best football team we’ve ever played here at UNH,” McDonnell said. “And that’s going from 1974 since I’ve been part of this program.”
