MASCAC honors PSU players

plymouthPLYMOUTH – Two Plymouth State University football players were recognized Monday with weekly awards from the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) for their performances in the Panthers’ victory last Saturday.

Senior safety Zach Ziemba (Manchester West) earned the top honor for PSU as the MASCAC Defensive Player of the Week, while sophomore Mitch Banuskevich (Milford) was named to the MASCAC Weekly Honor Roll. They were pivotal players in PSU’s 27-19 triumph over Western Connecticut State University in the 2016 conference opener

A 5-11, 187-pound safety, Ziemba made several big plays to key the Panther defense. He made a game-high 13 tackles (11 solo) and picked off a pass with a 24-yard return. Ziemba also blocked a PAT kick and returned 98 yards for two points. It’s the second straight week that Ziemba has earned weekly recognition from the MASCAC.

A 5-11, 170-pound running back, Banuskevich accumulated 126 yards from scrimmage to backbone the Panther offense. He gained 78 yards on 15 carries (5.2 average) and caught three passes for 48 yards (16.0 average). Banuskevich leads the team and ranks seventh in the conference in rushing yards (167 per game) and ranks second on the team in receptions (9) and receiving yards (118).

The Panthers, 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the MASCAC, have won their first three games of the season for the first time since the 2007 Panthers started 6-0. PSU returns home to host the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth this Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Currier Field in the Homecoming contest.
