UNH defeats Maine

DURHAM – Junior quarterback Trevor Knight threw a pair of touchdown passes and the defense came up with a couple of interceptions in the fourth period to lead the University of New Hampshire football team to 24-23 win over Maine in front of a record crowd of 15,854 in Wildcat Stadium on Thursday night.

The Wildcats (1-0) won their eighth straight game against Maine and retained the Brice-Cowell Musket that goes to the winner of the series.

Knight connected with junior receiver Rory Donovan  for an 11-yard TD with 13:41 left in the fourth quarter for the winning score. Morgan Ellman kicked the conversion to give UNH a 24-17 lead.

Knight completed 19 of his 30 passes for 158 yards and the two scores and had one interception. He also led  the Wildcats in rushing with 21 carries for 79 yards.

The Black Bears (0-1) answered with a Chris Ferguson to Jason Siminovich 4-yard scoring pass with 9:07 left in the game. But Kenny Doak’s conversion kick was wide to leave it at 24-23.

Sophomore safety Rick Ellison intercepted a Ferguson pass with 6:27 left in the fourth period and sophomore linebacker Quinlen Dean (Greenbelt, Md.) intercepted another pass with 25 seconds left to seal  the victory.
