Plymouth St. blanks Mt. Ida

NEWTON, Mass. – Junior quarterback Zack Edwards threw for 191 yards and three touchdowns to help Plymouth State University defeat Mt. Ida, 27-0, Saturday.

Each of Edwards’ three TD passes were caught by sophomore wideout Jacob Szulc, who had six receptions for 94 yards.

Plymouth State took its opening drive 66 yards on seven plays and grabbed a 7-0 lead when Szulc scored on a 21-yard pass  along the left sideline.

David Hamilton, who led the Panthers (2-0) with 49 yards rushing, scored from 4 yards away just seconds before the end of the first half, to help Plymouth State build a 14-0 lead at halftime.

The rest of the scoring came in the third quarter, with Szulc catching a 22 yard touchdown pass to cap a nine-play drive to open the quarter, and then breaking wide open on the right sideline to catch a 37-yard TD pass with 2:18 to play in the quarter.

Mount Ida was limited to 48 yards rushing and eight first downs. The Panthers picked up 21 first downs and were 6 of 12 on third-down conversions.

Sandown’s Josh David led Mt. Ida with 10 tackles.

Plymouth State’s Zach Ziemba was in on five tackles and intercepted a pass he returned for 31 yards.
